The following are just some tid bits I've gathered over the years talking about just what we really see...
 SHADES OF COLOR
The average human eye can distinguish 7,500,000 shades in nature.
 
A transparency  can reproduce 750,000 different shades.
 
A pre-press proof can reproduce 5,500 different shades.
 
A photographic color print can reproduce 1,500 different shades.
 
A sheet fed press can reproduce 1,500 different shades.
 
A web offset press can reproduce 750 different shades. 
 
CONTRAST LEVELS 
The average human eye can distinguish 1,000 levels in nature.
 
A transparency can reproduce 400 different levels.
 
A photographic print can reproduce 80 different levels.
